Wolfpack Swimming/Diving Cruises Past Pirates

Raleigh, N.C.--The NC State men's and women's swimming/diving programs recorded their second consecutive sweep of the season against the East Carolina Pirates on Thursday evening at the Willis Casey Natatorium. The Wolfpack women won their competition 150-92, while the men triumphed 139-94.
Caroline Curran started the meet strong for the NC State women with a win in the 1000 yard freestyle in a time of 10:24.06.
Mandy Horn then followed that performance with a victory of her own in the 200 yard freestyle in 1:53.84, just ahead of NCSU's Katie Sheridan in second with a time of 1:54.35.
Shana Bullock (2:04.59) and Catherine Parks (2:09.01) finished 1-2 in the 200 butterfly, while Annamaria Gazda took home the victory in the 200 backstoke with a finishing mark of 2:05.26.
Senior Kathleen Tonini (5:06.51) would claim the final individual victory of the evening when she led a sweep of the top three spots in the 500 freestyle that included Curran (5:09.51) and Allison Marks (5:12.85).
The Wolfpack women also claimed top honors in the 400 free relay when the team of Sheridan, Elizabeth Herron, Bullock and Horn won the race in 3:34.22.
In the diving well, Erin Bailey won both events again with a score of 302.33 in the 1-meter competition and 290.85 in the 3-meter.
Peter Pessagno gave the NC State men their first individual win of the meet with a win in the 1000 free (9:39.48) ahead of the Wolfpack's Chris Nixon (9:53.68).
In the 50 freestyle, junior Chris Swank (21.58) took home the victory, while freshman Kevin Barkley (1:52.96) took first-place honors in the 200 backstroke. Rob Yeager (2:07.14), another Wolfpack freshman, bested teammate Suha Akman (2:08.83) for first in the 200 breaststroke.
The NC State men captured both relay events with Barkley, Akman, Tim Haley and Andy Seitz winning the 400 yard medley relay (3:27.07), while Jack Deal, Cristian Rojas, Kevin Devine and Seitz took first in the 400 free relay (3:09.64).
Jared Bench dominated the 1 and 3-meter competitions once more, taking first in both with a mark of 326.7 in the 1-meter and 328.23 in the 3-meter.
NC State will travel to South Carolina on Saturday for a meet with the Gamecocks at 9:00 a.m.
