Wolfpack Falls To Gamecocks in Swimming/Diving

Columbia, S.C.--The NC State men's and women's swimming/diving squads were swept Saturday by the South Carolina Gamecocks in Columbia, S.C. The Wolfpack women lost the meet 125.5-109, while the men fell 124-97.
Mandy Horn led an NC State sweep of the 500 freestyle in a time of 5:06.34. Horn was followed by Kathleen Tonini (5:06.56) and Abigail Lewis (5:15.61).
Annamaria Gazda (57.96) and Erika Newell (59.01) finished 1-2 in the 100 backstroke, while Karen Cone (1.08.61), Bridgett Bowers (1:10.25) and Catherine Parks (1:14.76) dominated the 100 breaststroke.
The women also captured the 200 freestyle relay with the team of (Newell, Gazda, Cone and Elizabeth Herron doing the honors in 1:39.10.
For the men, Tim Haley won the 500 freestyle with a finishing mark of 4:42.97, followed by Dan Kesler and Jason Cooke, also from the Wolfpack.
Freshman Jack Deal won the 100 backstroke (54.21), while Suha Akman took the 100 breaststroke in 59.45.
Also, the Wolfpack 200 freestyle relay team of Jorge Gutierrez, Deal, Andy Seitz and Chris Swank took the win in 1:29.06.
The squads will next compete at the Maryland Invitational on November 15th in College Park, Maryland.
