Raleigh, N.C.-The pain Archie Miller starting feeling in his lower leg last week was very familiar. It's the same discomfort he felt exactly a year ago when he was diagnosed with a stress fracture in his left fibula, an injury that caused him to miss nine games.
NC State head coach Herb Sendek is well aware of his senior point guard's medical history, which is why he's closely monitoring Miller's minutes on the court.
"Right now Archie isn't practicing every day," Sendek said. "He does not presently have a stress fracture but we have detected some edema in one of his bones and given his history, we want to take every safeguard to make sure he doesn't go down the same path he went down last year. Between he and Sean (brother) having a reoccurrence of that same kind of injury, you just have to wonder of there's something genetic that makes them disposed to that."
Along with averaging 8.8 points per game this season, the 5-10 Miller is the ACC's leader in assist to turnover ratio (4.27-to-1). Though he missed a few days of practice last week, Miller did get 23 minutes of playing time in last Sunday's game at Houston. In the Wolfpack's 67-66 win over the Cougars, he was 0-5 from the floor with four assists, one turnover and two steals.
"We've taken advantage of this break to give him some additional rest," Sendek said. "He only practiced one day going into the Houston game. With a week between games, we're trying to just get that thing on the other side of the fence."
Following last Sunday's game, Miller flew to his home in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania to be with his family over the holidays. Like the rest of his teammates, he returned to Raleigh on Wednesday to begin preparations for Sunday night's 6-p.m. home against Maryland. Miller is expected to start at point guard against the Terrapins.
