Wolfpack Splits With Maryland In Swimming/Diving

Raleigh, N.C.-The NC State men's and women's swimming/diving squad split their season-opener Saturday afternoon with the University of Maryland at the Willis Casey Natatorium. The Terrapin women took a 152-81 victory, while the Wolfpack men posted a 134-98 win over the Maryland men.
Erin Bailey led the way for the Wolfpack women, qualifying for the NCAA Zone "B" Diving Championships on both boards with a mark of 315.53 in the 1-meter competition and a 283.73 in the three-meter competition. Erin Lambie also qualified for the Zone Competition when she placed second in the 1 meter with a score of 278.78.
Annamaria Gazda posted the lone individual victory in the pool for the women, with a win in the 200 Backstroke (2:05.40). Gazda nearly pulled off a second victory, but fell just short of winning the 200 IM with a mark of 2:08.42.
The Wolfpack men started the meet strong with a victory in the 400 medley relay. The quartet of Kevin Barkley, Suha Akman, Kevin Devine, and Andy Seitz won the event in 3:28.37.
Jack Deal blistered the field in the 200 Freestyle with a 1:44.01 finishing mark, just ahead of fellow Wolfpacker Jorge Gutierrez (1:45.67). The Wolfpack went 1-2 again in the 50 Freestyle when Chris Swank (21.72) edged Devine (21.92) for the win. NC State then later swept the 200 IM when Cristian Rojas (1:56.52), Tim Haley (1:56.56) and Akman (1:57.30) took the top three spots.
Haley would strike again in the 200 Butterfly with a victory over Thomas Ehrhardt of Maryland, posting a time of 1:53.55.
Seitz would get an individual victory following his performance in the 400 medley relay, taking the 100 Freestyle in 47.90.
Barkley jumped in on the action later when he bested Erik Weinberg of Maryland with a time of 1:54.62.
Kesler took a narrow victory in the 20th event of the morning with a victory in the 500 Freestyle (4:44.27). Peter Pessagno (4:45.28) took third in the event.
Jared Bench won both diving competitions on the men's side with a 285.93 on the 1-meter board and a mark of 309.83 on the 3-meter.
The next competition for the Wolfpack is Oct. 27th at Duke University.
