NC State Wrestling Handles Campbell, 31-12

RALEIGH, N.C. (Jan. 31, 2001) -- Jonathan Williams and Dustin Kawa recorded pins, and Zach Breitenbach won by technical fall Wednesday night at Reynolds Coliseum to lead NC State to a 31-12 college wrestling victory over Campbell. The Wolfpack, which won seven of the 10 matches, improved to 8-6 in dual matches this season, while Campbell fell to 3-7.

NC State's George Cintron (15-6) got the Wolfpack off to a 3-0 team lead with a 10-3 victory over Andy Bricker (14-8) at 125 pounds, but Campbell's Adam Doherty (9-6) pinned Kenneth Alphin (0-3) at 1:41 in the 133-pound match to give the Camels a 6-3 team lead.

Williams (4-4) got the six points back with a first-period fall against Joey Bricker (1-4) at 141 pounds. Williams actually recorded the fall from the down position after Bricker had taken a 3-2 lead in the bout with a reversal. But in an attempt to score back points on Williams, Bricker rolled over on his own shoulders, giving Williams the pin at the 2:51 mark and vaulting the Pack back into the team lead at 9-6.

The Wolfpack cruised after that. Tommy Davis (9-2) made it 13-6 with a 20-9 major decision over Mike Wrinkle (0-9) at 149, Pierre Pryor (15-3) took a 5-2 decision over Mike Cox (10-9) at 157, and 18th-ranked Scott Garren (17-7) won a 10-2 major decision over Lantz Nixon (5-10) at 165 to extend NC State's team lead to 20-6.

The clincher came when Kawa (11-9) pinned Josh McConnell (1-11) at the 3:19 mark at 174 pounds, giving NC State a 26-6 lead with three matches remaining.

Campbell broke the NC State streak at five matches when John Christian (3-1) handed Jon Godwin (4-3) a 9-6 defeat at 184, but Breitenbach (19-4) recorded a takedown on Jason Greenawalt (3-11) just seconds into the 197-pound bout and then recorded five near-falls for a 16-0 technical fall. The bout was called at the 3:00 mark and gave NC State a 31-9 lead.

Campbell heavyweight John Black (11-8) scored the final three team points of the evening with a 9-3 decision over David DeBinder (2-5).

Wolfpack Notebook: Cintron, Pryor and Breitenbach all extended their career-longest winning streaks with victories. Cintron now has won five in a row, nine of his last 10, and 12 of his last 14. Pryor's decision over Cox was his 10th in a row. Pryor has won 12 of his last 13 matches. Breitenbach's technical fall over Greenawalt was his 10th straight. He has won 12 of his last 13, and 15 of his last 17. He has won his last four matches by major decision or technical fall.

Breitenbach, who reached the 60-win plateau with the evening's victory, is now just one win away from recording his second 20-win season in a row. With his next victory, he will become the first Wolfpack wrestler to have 20 wins in back-to-back seasons since Tommy Davis in 1998 and 1999.

Davis now has 68 career wins and is just nine away from cracking NC State's top 10 for career wins.
