NC State Swimming Sweeeps Hokies

RALEIGH, NC (Jan. 20, 2001) -- The NC State mens and womens swimming/diving squads swept the visiting Virginia Tech Hokies Saturday afternoon on Senior Day at the Willis Casey Aquatics Center. The Wolfpack women were victorious by a score of 132-102, while the men won 143.5-98.5.
Leading the way for the NC State women were Mary Mittendorf and Andrea Hastings. Mittendorf, a senior from Charlotte, NC, won the 200 IM with a time of 2:05.73 and the 500 freestyle in 5:03.05. Hastings, a junior from Carmel, IN, was victorious in the 50 freestyle in 24.35, while also picking up the win in the 100 freestyle (52.83). In the fifth event of the day, junior Mandy Horn (Overland Park, KS) took the victory in the 200 freestyle (1:53.00), while junior Shana Bullock (Richmond, VA) finished first in the 200 butterfly (2:05.77). Sophomore Annamaria Gazda (Budapest, Hungary) was also victorious in the 200 backstroke (2:04.05) after swimming the leadoff leg of the winning 400 medley relay team (3:53.80), which included seniors Natalie Jones (Cary, NC), Dawn DeLuca (Pensauken, NJ) and Hastings.
The duo of Erin Bailey and Erin Lambie took victories in the diving competition, with Bailey winning the 1-meter (286.50) and Lambie winning the 3-meter (311.63).
On the mens side, the highlight of the day was senior Braden Holloway (Baton Rouge, LA) setting a new pool record in the 100 backstroke (49.68), breaking the record set by Glenn Houck of Virginia (49.81), set on February 26, 1988. Holloway set the record while swimming the first leg of the 400 medley relay, which was won by the Wolfpack contingent of senior Richard Culberson (Charlotte, NC) junior Suha Akman (Ankara, Turkey), freshman Christian Rojas (Cary, NC) and senior Greg Solt (Northampton, PA) in 3:28.89. Holloway also tallied victories in the 200 IM (1:54.44) and the 100 freestyle (46.94). Senior Steve Matthews (Hershey, PA) picked up the first individual victory of the day for the Wolfpack men by winning the 100 freesytle (9:38.13), only to win again later in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:40.00. Junior Tim Haley (Carmel, IN) also picked up a pair of wins, taking the 200 freestyle (1:43.06) and the 200 butterfly (1:51.69).
Solt finished first overall in the 50 freestyle (20.91), while Culberson was also first in the 200 backstroke (1:53.13).
In diving for the men, freshman Pat Roberts (Spokane, WA) was victorious yet again in both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards with scores of 305.40 and 304.88, respectively.
The Wolfpacks next meet will be Saturday, January 27th at Clemson University at noon.
