Durham, N.C. (Sept. 8) - In what turned out to be an exciting, offensive game, the NC State men's soccer team fell to Butler 3-2 Sept. 8 in the first game of the Duke Footlocker Tournament being hosted by Duke University.
Butler (1-2) got on the scoreboard first, as Mike Mariscalco took a long feed from Thulio Goncalves and beat NC State goalie Mitchell Watson eight minutes into the game. NC State (0-2-1) responded when Junior Lee Baldwin used some fancy footwork to free himself on the goalline, and found fellow newcomer Isreal Mejia all alone in the box at the 28:02 mark. The two teams went into the half tied, 1-1.
Butler once again got the upper hand, as Nick Pantazi found the back of the net at the 74:03 mark. The Pack again got the game tied, this time just three minutes later. Senior Tony Malcolm crossed the ball to Baldwin on the far post, and Baldwin served a perfect ball to Damon Butler who beat Bulldog's keeper Grant Berrie. The goal was Butler's second of the season, while Baldwin finished the night with two assists.
Butler got the game winning goal however, as Pantazi scored his second goal of the night with just under eight minutes to play. NC State outshot the Bulldogs 19-12 for the game, with NC State's Watson notching four saves and Butler's Berrie finishing with seven.
The Pack will return to action tomorrow, when NC State faces Long Island in the Duke Footlocker Invitational, at 5:00 p.m.
