GREENSBORO, NC - NC State quarterback Philip Rivers (Fr., Athens, AL) was named the ACC Rookie of the Week, the league announced on Sept. 4.
Rivers guided the Wolfpack to a 38-31 double overtime win on Saturday night at Carter-Finley Stadium. The native of Athens, Alabama, set freshman records for attempts (57), completions (29), yards (397) and touchdowns (3). The 397 yards passing were the fifth-best single-game total in school history and the 29 completions were tied for sixth-best.
Trailing 7-0 in the second quarter, he connected with Koren Robinson for his first career touchdown pass with five seconds remaining in the first half and later tossed a 35-yard touchdown pass to Andy Bertrand and a 35-yarder to Joe Gray in the fourth quarter.
The 6-foot-5 true freshman also led the Wolfpack to a game-tying drive in the final minutes of regulation that ended with a 33-yard by Kent Passingham with one second remaining.
The Pack will play at Indiana this Saturday at 12:10 p.m. and can be seen nationally on ESPN2.
