It would be fairly safe to predict that North Carolina news stands won't have any problems selling the Oct. 2 edition of Sports Illustrated. After hearing about the exploits of Philip Rivers, the magazine dispatched writer Tim Crothers and a few photographers to Raleigh the week of NC State's game against Georgia Tech to investigate the commotion surrounding the Wolfpack's freshman quarterback.
The end result was a three-page feature article entitled "Young Man Rivers."
The story chronicles Rivers' rise from being a coach's son in Athens, Alabama to his rapid ascension to stardom as NC State's starting quarterback.
No wonder Sports Illustrated was intrigued. Through four games this season, Rivers leads the ACC in passing (1331 yds.), and total offense (325.2 ypg.), and he is No.1 in the nation in touchdown passes with 13.
And perhaps more impressively, he's guided the Pack to three improbable comeback victories in route to a 4-0 start. Rivers has also become only the fifth player in ACC history to be named the league's rookie of the week four times.
