Men's Soccer Routs Georgia Southern 6-0

Raleigh, N.C. (Sept. 27, 2000) -- The NC State men's soccer team used its biggest offensive explosion since 1997 to defeat visiting Georgia Southern, 6-0, this afternoon at the Method Road Soccer Complex. The win is NC State's first of the season, and gives the Pack some momentum for this weekends showdown at # 7 Virginia.
The Wolfpack (1-5-2, 0-2 ACC) put the game away early by scoring its fastest goal of the season. Just over four minutes into the game, Nick Olivencia found freshman Scott MacNeill alone at the top of the box for MacNeill's first collegiate goal. The Pack added some insurance, as MacNeill assist on a Lee Baldwin goal at the in the 23rd minute, giving the Pack a 2-0 halftime lead.
NC State would not let up in the second half, as the Pack netted four goals. Olivencia converted a penalty kick at the 53:06 mark. Isreal Mejia then capitalized on a breakaway at 58:02, after taking a pass from Baldwin. Olivenica would score his second goal of the contest off of a Matt Tabor cross in the 62nd minute. Only four minutes later, Baldwin would notch his second goal of the game, this time using a key pass from Tony Malcolm.
The Eagles (3-5-1) also had their share of shots on the NC State goal. Pack keeper Mitchell Watson racked up 10 saves, including a penalty kick with two minutes to go in the first half. Senior Kenny Gregson saw his first action in goal of the season, as he played 14 minutes and recorded 3 saves.
NC State will travel to #7 Virginia this weekend. The Pack faces the Cavs on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
