Raleigh, N.C. (Sept. 17) - The No. 23-ranked Maryland Terrapins got two first half goals from forward Abe Thompson and defeated the host NC State Wolfpack 5-0, on Sept. 17 at the Method Road Soccer Complex. The game marked the ACC opener for both squads.
With their offensive explosion, the Terrapins (3-3) snapped a three-game losing streak, while NC State (0-4-2) has now lost two in a row.
Thompson got Maryland on the scoreboard at the 11:17 mark, when he won possession of the ball after a Maryland corner kick and beat Pack keeper Mitchell Watson up high. Thompson gave the Terps some insurance just before the half, as he took a cross from Nick Purdom and netted his third goal of the season to give Maryland a 2-0 lead.
Maryland came out strong in the second half, with Bryan Vitagliano finding the back of the net off of a cross from Rob Birch just over 10 minutes into the second frame. Substitute Clarence Goodson then capitalized on a two-on-one break and scored at the 78:51 mark. Birch got his second assist of the game, when he found Seth Stammler alone on the back post with just over one minute remaining to cap off the scoring.
The Wolfpack got their fair shots of attempts on the Maryland goal, but could not put a ball past Terps goalkeeper Christian Lewis. NC State's best chance came midway through the second half when Tony Malcolm beat Lewis with a shot from the top of the box, but Terps defender Nick Downing was able to get his head on the ball at the goal line.
Maryland outshot the Pack 16-10 for the game. Lewis recorded the shutout for Maryland, as he notched six saves on the day, while NC State's Watson finished with five.
The Wolfpack will travel to Clemson on Sept. 24. The next home match for NC State will be Sept. 27 against Georgia Southern at 3 p.m.
