Williams Joins Cornerback Carrousel

As a free safety last season, Brian Williams was NC State's leading tackler. This fall, he could end up knocking down more passes than ball carriers. Williams, a 6'0, 200 pound junior from High Point, has worked at both safety and cornerback in the Wolfpack's first two days of preseason practice.
Even before the beginning of spring drills, head coach Chuck Amato and his staff knew that both cornerback spots would become major areas of need following the departure of seniors Tony Scott and Lloyd Harrison.
Williams has joined redshirt freshman J.J. Washington, true freshman James Walker and junior Anthony Cason in NC State's cornerback sweepstakes.
"We're looking at it to try to get the best 11 on the field," Amato said following Friday night's practice. "If that has to be one of the moves we make, then so be it."
On those occasions when Williams has worked at corner, sophomore Terrence Holt, who's listed as a strong safety, has been getting a long look at free safety.
Julius Patterson has also been played a part in this version of football musical chairs. A wide receiver last season, the sophomore was moved to cornerback during the spring. Now he's back at wide receiver.
"We're taking a look at Julius at wide receiver today, and we're going to go with that for a while," Amato said.
Patterson made just one reception in limited playing time last season.
