Talk Of ACC Expansion Stays On Backburner

On July 23, ACC commissioner John Swofford said talk of a bigger league is now in the background-and maybe for quite some time.
"We've been through some very serious discussions about it and evaluated it and did not reach a point where seven schools were ready to take that step," Swofford said. "One of the primary questions you have to ask is, 'are we disadvantaged as a league by being nine?' so far, the answer to that question is no."
Swofford said the ACC seriously talked about expanding from its current membership of nine schools to ten or even 12, but decided against it.
ACC revenues sharing reached an all-time high in 1999.
Swofford said the ACC would consider expanding to ten or 12 teams if it believed it was losing its place at the table from a national perspective.
