Published reports in the News & Observer and Durham Morning Herald say that Spence will be named as the new head basketball coach at North Carolina Central University on Friday afternoon.
The decision to hire Spence was made by former NC State tight end Lin Dawson, who took over as NCCU's athletics director last month.
Spence played an integral role in the Wolfpack's run to the national championship in 1974. Following his graduation in 1976, he pursued a career in teaching and coaching. Spence's resume includes head-coaching stints at Cary Senior High School and East Wake.
North Carolina Central has been seeking a replacement for Greg Jackson, who stepped down on May 17 to become the new head coach at Delaware State.
