Sources have told the Vancouver Province that Lowe, a one-time star at NC State and current Minnesota Timberwolves assistant coach, was offered the Vancouver job last week.
Grizzlies president Dick Versace told the Province that Lowe "blew me away" during an interview for the position. However, a timetable to finish out a deal hasn't been set.
"If things don't go the way I want them to go, then I might open it up again. I might take all summer if I have to," Versace said.
Lowe, 40, also interviewed with the Atlanta Hawks, who have since hired Lon Kruger as their new head coach.
The Grizzlies have been in the market for a new coach since Lionel Hollins was fired at the end of the regular season.
After leading the Wolfpack to the 1983 NCAA Championship, Lowe had an NBA playing career that lasted four years. He originally became a Minnesota assistant under Jimmy Rogers in 1991. Lowe was then promoted to the head coaching position when Rogers was fired midway through the '92-'93 campaign.
The Timberwolves fired Lowe in the spring of 1994. After spending six years as an assistant in Cleveland, he returned to the Minnesota bench last season.
