Raleigh, NC (April 15) - The NC State football squad concluded 2000 spring workouts with an hour and a half Red and White scrimmage at Carter-Finley Stadium this afternoon. The offense wore red and competed against the red-clad defense in a steady rain throughout the workout.
The Pack was without the services of freshman quarterback Philip Rivers, who had surgery to insert a screw in a finger fracture yesterday. Sophomore Jatavis Sanders saw the most action on the afternoon, completing 10 of his 20 pass attempts for 155 yards. His only touchdown pass was a 44 yarder to sophomore wideout Koren Robinson.
"We missed Philip Rivers,' said head coach Chuck Amato after the workout. "You could feel our players deflate a little bit after they heard he wouldn't play, because for a guy who just turned 18 a couple of months ago, he's done a lot for this team. That really limited us as to what we could do offensively, but it gave us a chance to give Jatavis and the other quarterbacks some good work."
Amato praised the work ethic of his team this spring. "They've really worked hard and given us great effort," he continued. "Hopefully that work ethic and effort can carry over into the summer and fall. We came out this spring at Square A, having to learn new terminology and new everything. They've come a long way in just 15 practices."
Toki McCray and LaGrant Maye also saw action at quarterback, with McCray completing just one of his six attempts and Maye going three for six for 45 yards. Carlos Doggett was the leading rusher with 45 yards on 16 carries.
Koren Robinson had three catches for a gain of 55-yards, including the 44-yard score. Elliott London had three graps for 44 yards, while Willie Wright had two for 34.
Defensively, outside linebacker Levar Fisher led the way with seven tackles, including a three-yard tackle for loss. FIsher also recovered a fumble and intercepted a pass. End Brian Jamison had four stops, including three tackles for loss, while Corey Smith also had three stops behind the line of scrimmage.
