The award is presented annually to the NC State player who typifies the attributes of the Wolfpack's 1963 captain, who was killed in an automobile accident in May of 1964. Wells overcame an injury-plagued year to shine at season's end. He started the final five games of the season, contributing to the Pack's run to the NIT semifinals and hit 69.2 percent (9-of-13) from three-point range in the postseason.
Junior Damon Thornton earned awards as the team's top rebounder (7.6 per game) and highest field-goal percentage (52.5 percent). Thornton has led the Pack in rebounding in each of his three seasons and ranks third in school history in career field goal percentage (55.7 percent). Thornton also shared team honors for most deflections with sophomore Anthony Grundy. Both players totaled 260 deflections this season. Grundy also earned the award as the Pack's Best Screener/Cutter for the second straight season.
Junior Kenny Inge and freshman Damien Wilkins were the winners of the Tom Gugliotta Most Improved Award. Inge overcame an early knee injury that forced him to miss four games and averaged 10.3 points and 6.4 rebounds this season. Inge averaged 14.6 rebounds and 8.0 rebounds in the NIT and became just the 34th player in school history to surpass the 1,000 point mark for his career with 1,011 career points through three seasons. Wilkins averaged 11.4 points and 5.8 rebounds this season and earned second-team All-ACC Tournament honors following two outstanding performances against Virginia and Maryland.
Wilkins and Inge also shared the Lorenzo Charles Offensive Rebounding Award. Inge finished third among all ACC players, averaging 2.83 offensive rebounds per game while Wilkins was fifth at 2.77. Inge held team honors with 22 charges drawn this season, unofficially the highest total among ACC players this season (Duke's Shane Battier took 20 charges), earning the Monte Towe Award.
Senior captain Justin Gainey shared the Terry Gannon Best Free Throw Shooter Award with sophomore Archie Miller. Gainey shot 74.7 percent (65-of-87) from the charity stripe, while Miller hit 80 percent (28-of-35). Miller was also the winner of the Chris Corchiani Assist-To-Turnover Award, compiling a 1.6:1 assist-to-turnover ratio (55 assists, 35 turnovers). Gainey and Wells were presented with the Rodney Monroe Best Three-point Shooter Award. Wells hit 52 percent (13-of-25) from three-point range this season, while Gainey made 38 percent (38-of-100).
Head coach Herb Sendek presented his assistant coaches (Sean Miller, Larry
Harris, John Groce and Mark Phelps) with the Nate McMillan Best Defender
Award, honoring the staff's excellent job in preparation and scouting.
