Wolfpack Football Scrimmages

The first-team defense dominated the first half of the scrimmage, while the first-team offense, led by freshman quarterback Philip Rivers, was more successful in the final portion of the afternoon. "It just showed this team that a football game last the WHOLE 60 minutes," said head coach Chuck Amato following the scrimmage. "In the first half, the defense put up a lot of highlights. In the second half, it didn't seem like the offense got stopped one time. But it was good that we had a demonstation of what it takes to play a complete game."
Rivers completed 11 of 28 passes for the afternoon, gaining 201 yards. He threw two touchdown passes, a 30-yarder to Eric Leak and a 26-yarder to Koren Robinson. Tailback Carlos Doggett also scored a touchdown, hitting paydirt after a 25-yard scamper. Quarterback Jatavis Sanders, who has missed time this week after battling tonsilitis, was seven for 12 for 55 yards.
On the first-team defense, free safety Brian Williams tallied six total tackles, while outside linebacker Clayton White had four, all of which were first hits or solo stops. White also had a tackle for loss. Among the backup defenders, redshirt freshman tackle Sean Locklear had nine tackles, including four sacks, while Shane Riggs made six stops, including three sacks.
"We're looking forward to Saturday," Amato continued. "We just want them to go out there and have some fun and see what they can do without the coaches on the field."
The public is invited to attend Saturday's scrimmage. Admission is free.
