Wolfpack Looks Strong Heading Into Conference Tournament

* NC State And The ACC Tournament: NC State has a strong tradition of excellence in the ACC Tournament. Since 1976, the Wolfpack has won 10 ACC championships and finished first or second in the conference tournament 16 times in 24 years. NC State won its last ACC championship in 1996. Under head coach Bob Guzzo, the Wolfpack won the team championship in 1976, 1978, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991 and 1996.
NC State wrestlers have won 81 individual ACC championships, including three a year ago: Tommy Davis at 141, Pierre Pryor at 157 and Kevin Boross at 174. Since Guzzo became head coach of the Wolfpack in 1975, NC State wrestlers have captured 70 individual conference championships.
NC State had its greatest ACC Tournament for individual titles in 1982, when six Wolfpackers won ACC championships. The Pack captured five individual championships in 1981 and 1983, and took home four individual trophies in 1988, 1991, 1992 and 1993. Wolfpack wrestlers have won three individual championships in the same year 10 times.
* Head coach Bob Guzzo: NC State*s Bob Guzzo, now completing his 26th season at NC State, passed a pair of career milestones the last two years, winning his 300th dual match last January 30 at James Madison, and his 100th ACC dual-meet victory this year, on January 22 vs. Maryland. Guzzo is one of just two ACC coaches ever to record 300 dual-match wins overall and more than 100 in the conference. Guzzo, who finished the 1999-2000 regular season with an overall career mark of 315-152-7 and an ACC mark of 103-47, is in line this season to be named the ACC Coach of the Year for the fifth time in the last 13 years.
* The 1999-2000 Season: NC State began the year with a third-place finish at the Navy Invitational, but then slumped to a ninth-plae finish at the Lehigh Invitational and took a 36-3 drubbing at then-fourth-ranked Oklahoma in the first dual match of the season. The Wolfpack won its next four matches, including a 21-18 win at North Carolina on January 11, before taking a 33-3 whipping January 15 at then-eleventh-ranked Lehigh.
That tough start prepared the Wolfpack well for the remainder of the season, and the Pack comes into the ACC Tournament having won its last five dual matches and eight of its last 10. NC State finished the season undefeated in the ACC for the first time since 1992.
* Five Wolfpackers Unbeaten In The ACC: NC State comes into the ACC Tournament as the favorite to capture its 11th conference championship in large part because of five wrestlers who went through the regular conference season without a loss. Senior Lee Carroll (3-0 at 133), junior Tommy Davis (5-0 at 149, and the defending conference champion at 141), freshman Scott Garren (3-0 at 157 and 1-0 at 165), senior Joel Dramis (4-0 at 165 and 1-0 at 174) and Zach Breitenbach (5-0 at 184) all could be No. 1 seeds in this weekend*s tournament. In addition, Kevin Boross (3-1 at 174) is the defending ACC champion at 174 and will get strong consideration for the top seed at 174.
* Garren Steps In To Replace Injured Pryor: When NC State lost Pierre Pryor to a fractured wrist in the season-opening Navy Invitational on November 20, the Wolfpack faced the prospects of a huge hole in the lineup at 157 pounds. Pryor, a junior from Virginia Beach, Va., is the defending ACC champion at 157 and was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler in the Navy Invitational after winning the tournament title at 157 with three first-round pins in four matches.
Meanwhile, Scott Garren, a freshman from Gibbstown, N.J., began the season competing for mat time with senior Joel Dramis at 165, and compiling a 7-3 record at that weight, two of the losses coming to wrestlers ranked in the national top 10. Included in Garren*s wins at 165 were a technical fall and three falss, including a 38-second pin of North Carolina*s Jason Wilson on January 15 at Chapel Hill. Following a 7-1 loss to ninth-ranked Travis Doto of Lehigh, Garren took three weeks off to drop down to 157, and he has dominated at that classification as well, going 6-1 with a pin and a technical fall. He defeated UNC*s highly regarded freshman Dennis Landin by technical fall, 15-0 at the 5:14 mark.. Garren finished the regular season with three consecutive wins over ACC opponents, including a pin of Duke*s Geoff Anderson at the 3:46 mark.
