Godette, who coached outside linebackers at NC State in 1994, returns to the program after spending the past four seasons coaching the defensive line for the Miami Dolphins.
"After coaching on the college and professional levels, Cary brings experience and expertise that will be very beneficial in training our defensive front," said Amato. "His familiarity with this university and with the state of North Carolina will a valuable asset in terms of recruiting as well."
Godette is a 23-year coaching veteran with experience on the high school, collegiate and professional levels. He served as the defensive line coach for the Carolina Panthers in 1995, following his year at NC State. Prior to his first stint with the Wolfpack, he coached the same position at Georgia Tech (1992-93), East Carolina (1990-91, 1977-79), and Cincinnati (1987-88). He also coached tight ends (1985-86) and outside linebackers (1983-84) during his six years with the Bearcats. In 1980, he followed Pat Dye from East Carolina to Wyoming, where he coached linebackers from 1980-82. He spent the 1989 season as a defensive assistant at Terry Sanford High School.
A 1977 graduate (B.S. in physical education) of East Carolina, Godette was a first-team All-Amercian at defensive end in 1976 and an honorable mention choice in 1975. He was a three-time All-Southern Conference performer and helped lead the Pirates to two league championships and a four-year record of 32-12. In 1998, he was inducted into the ECU Hall of Fame.
Godette, who will be 46 on March 20, is married to the former Ruby Lee Williams of Pinetops, N.C.
