Virginia's lone goal came in the third minute of play in the form of an own goal when Wolfpack defender Tony Malcolm accidentally deflected a Virginia cross into his own net while attempting to clear the ball.
Virginia Head Coach George Gelnovatch was happy that his team advanced. "I'm glad it's over," he said. "The pace of the game was not good. It never got out of control, but it just turned into kind of an ugly mess because we couldn't get those two or three goals early that we wanted. We just have to put it behind us and realize that tomorrow we have to step out and be a little sharper."
On the goals, Gelnovatch said, "It looked like a pretty good cross and just a missed clearance and we were fortunate for it to go in the goal."
NC State head coach George Tarantini was disheartened by the loss, but he was proud of his team and expects that they will only improve next season.
"It's no secret that we're having a rough season, but this league is very tough," said Tarantini. "We don't have the talent that we've had in the past, but we have the same determination. I think I have the best goalkeeper in the country (sophomore Mitchell Watson) coming back for the next two years."
The own goal disappointed Tarantini, but he felt that Virginia deserved to score. He said, "If you put on pressure, you will be rewarded and Virginia put on great pressure in the first half."
NC State's best scoring opportunity of the day came with 20 minutes left in the first half. Senior Nick Olivenicia put a shot just over the Cavs net after receiving a cross from the far side.
