Raleigh, N.C. - NC State's women's basketball team kicked off the 2000-01 season with a 73-55 win over Athletes in Action in an exhibition contest in Reynolds Coliseum on Nov. 6. The Wolfpack , ranked 18th in the preseason USA Today/ESPN Coaches poll, were led by a trio of underclassmen that contributed 34 points and 16 rebounds in the win.
Freshman Adeola Olanrewaju led NC State with 12 points in 19 minutes of action off the bench. The Brooklyn, N.Y. native hit six of nine shots and grabbed six rebounds in her first collegiate action. Sophomores Kaayla Chones and Amy Simpson each contributed 11 points in the win. Chones led NC State with eight rebounds and Simpson recorded three steals.
"We are a very young team but I thought they played hard tonight," commented NC State coach Kay Yow. "The effort was very good but the execution was not where we want it to be. But I feel its just a matter of time until we get the chemisty that we need."
The Wolfpack Women shot 48.5 percent from the floor and outrebounded AIA 40-34. NC State also recorded 14 steals, led by Tynesha Lewis' four thefts.
Athletes in Action was led by Karyn Karlin's 19 points and eight rebounds. Crystal Carpenter contributed 11 points and Jenny Noll chipped in 10.
