Men's Soccer Battles Liberty To 1-1 Tie
10/4/2000 12:00:00 AM | Men's Soccer
NC State (1-6-3, 0-3 ACC) struck first as a pair of freshman hooked up for the goal. Isreal Mejia fed a through-ball that led to a breakaway for Scott MacNeill. MacNeill calmly beat Liberty goalkeeper Dean Short for his second goal of the season at the 19:16 mark.
Liberty (4-3-2) would answer with a goal just under five minutes later. Substitute Brently Kellum crossed the ball into the Wolfpack box, and found Jose Gomez on the back post for the Flames only score of the day in the 25th minute. The two teams were tied up at the half, and neither would score in the second or in either overtime period.
NC State got into the offensive flow early in this game, and narrowly missed a couple of scoring chances. Only 1:40 in the match-up, the Pack's Nick Olivencia hit the goal post on a penalty kick. Olivencia also riffled one of the post four minutes later, as the Pack was looking for the lead.
The Flames also took their shots on goal, and wound up outshooting the Pack 21-17. As it appeared the two squads would play to a tie, Liberty's Jason Streets bounced a shot off the NC State goalpost with 10 minutes left in the second overtime.
Both goalkeepers came up big on the day, with NC State's Mitchell Watson recording 12 saves, and Liberty's Short registering nine. Watson also saved a Flames penalty kick in the second half, when he got a hand on the shot and redirected over the goal.
Next up for NC State is a showdown with ACC rival Wake Forest. The Wolfpack will host the Demon Deacons on Oct. 8 at 2:00 p.m.
