RALEIGH, N.C. (Oct. 20) - NC State head coach Herb Sendek has named senior Kenny Inge, junior Archie Miller and sophomore Damien Wilkins men's basketball team captains for the 2000-2001 campaign.
Inge, a 6-8 forward from Virginia Beach, Va., joined an elite group last season when he surpassed the 1,000-point total for his career. An intense competitor in the frontcourt, Inge finished his junior campaign with strong performances, averaging 14.6 points and eight rebounds in five NIT games and earning All-NIT honors. He ranked third in the league in offensive rebounds in 2000 with 2.83 and was the unofficial conference leader in charges drawn with 22.
"Kenny has continued to grow and mature as a young man in significant and special ways," said Sendek. "He has now established himself as a team leader and as an exemplary role model for the younger players."
Miller, a 5-10 guard, has been one of NC State's top shooters during his career. The Beaver Falls, Pa., native already ranks 10th in school history with 104 career three-pointers, and he has shot better from beyond the three point arc (40.8 percent) than inside it (26.3 percent). His 1.6:1 assist-to-turnover ratio was the best on the Wolfpack squad last season.
"Archie is perhaps the most selfless, team-centered player that I've ever had the privelege of coaching," Sendek continued. "He is a tireless worker and vocal leader. In many ways, Archie is the 'tie that binds' everyone together."
Wilkins, a 6-6 forward from Washington, N.C., was one of the Pack's most versatile players in 2000. He set NC State freshman records for starts (34) and minutes played (1,083) and finished the season ranked among the top five freshmen in school history in scoring (389), rebounding (197) and assists (77). He was a co-winner of the squad's Most Improved Player award for 2000 and finished the season strong by averaging 18 points in two ACC Tournament games on the way to all-tourney honors.
"Damien is the youngest player that we've ever named captain," Sendek added. "This distinction certainly reflects his outstanding leadership and the positive totality of his impact on our program."
