Raleigh, N.C. (Jan. 8) - Both the NC State men and women were victorious in swimming versus UNCW at the Willis Casey Aquatics Center.
The Pack women won 132-111 while the NC State men beat the Seahawks 141-94. With the victories, the Wolfpack men remained perfect on the season at 8-0, while the NC State women improved to a 7-2 mark. The losses dropped the Seahawk women to 5-1 while the UNCW men are now 1-4 on the season.
The NC State women held off a late surge by the Seahawks thanks in large part to co-captian Sue Vogt. Vogt won the 1,650 free in a time of 17:35.20 and had a strong performance in the 500 free. Aiding Vogt was diver Erin Bailey. Bailey set a new pool and school mark of 305.4 on the three-meter board.
The Seahawk women got a superb effort from Amy Sands. Sands, a sophomore from Roswell, Ga., won in both the 200 free (1:53.92) and the 500 free (5:04.01).
As for the men, diver Andy Johnson wrote a new chapter for himself in the NC State record book. Johnson set a new mark on both the one-meter and three-meter boards on Saturday. His score of 362.775 on the one-meter and 369 on the three-meter board gave him victories in both events.
The UNCW men got individual victories from Dan Gallagher (21.51 in the 50 free), Mike Ratigan (1:56.17 in the 200 back) and Scott Burrell (2:14.09 in the 200 breast).
Next weekend, the Wolfpack will travel to face James Madison and Virginia. The meet against JMU will begin at 5:00 p.m. on Firday in Harrisonburg, Va. NC State will then travel to Charlottesville, Va. to take on Virginia on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
