NC State Men and Women Sweep Tri-Meet in Swimming

RALEIGH, NC (January 21, 2000) - Both the NC State men and women's swim teams got back on the winning track as they each picked up two victories in a tri-meet versus Texas Christian and Old Dominion. The NC State men defeated TCU, 91-46 and ODU, 95-44, while TCU beat ODU, 80-52. On the women's side, the Wolfpack knocked off TCU, 80-58 and ODU, 99-40, while TCU topped ODU, 90-48. With those results, the NC State men move to 11-1, the Wolfpack women are 10-3, the TCU men are 5-2, the Horned Frog women are 6-4, the ODU men are 7-2, and the Monarch women are 1-8. The 10 victories for the NC State women are their highest total since the 1992-93 team went 10-4.
Jamie D'Agostino (ODU) and Brandi Stergion (NC State) each gave impressive performances on the women's side. D'Agostino, a freshman from Ardsley, N.Y., won the 1,000 freestyle (10:28.74), the 200 freestyle (1:53.96), and the 500 freestyle (5:07.97). Stergion, w junior who hails from Danville, Va., won the 50 freestyle (24.72) and the 100 freestyle (53.80) for the Pack. NC State's Annamaria Gazda also won two events on the day as she tied TCU's Marisa Schenke in the 100 backstroke (58.55) while taking the 200 backstroke (2:03.81).
On the men's side, NC State dominated the competition. The Pack's Matt Brado, a native of Springfield, Va., led the way for the men as he won the 200 freestyle (1:39.89) and the 100 freestyle (45.69). Diver Andy Johnson won on both the one and three-meter boards while Braden Holloway had the top times in the 100 backstroke (50.22) and 200 IM (1:54.25). NC State won the first nine events and had the top times in all but three of the 16 events participated in during the tri-meet.
Up next for the Pack, is a battle tomorrow in Blacksburg, Va. against Virginia Tech. Old Dominion will next meet Richmond on January 26, while Texas Christian will face Southern Methodist on January 28.
