"I feel very fortunate that Doc Holliday has decided to come to North Carolina State," said Amato. "As their assistant head coach, he has played a major role in the success of the West Virginia program and is one of the reasons that they have played for the national championship twice in the last 12 years. He is a relentless recruiter and has had great success recruiting South Florida, which is a hotbed of talent. He"s an addition that will really help propel us and I believe he will be a tremendous asset to our program."
Holliday, who starred at linebacker at West Virginia from 1975-78, has coached on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball during his tenure at WVU. He directed the Mountaineer wide receivers from 1984-89 and from 1994-99, and worked with the linebackers from 1990-93. He was named quarterback coach following the 1999 season.
"I"ve had opportunities prior to this to leave West Virginia," said Holliday on Monday afternoon. "But Chuck Amato is the main reason I decided to come to NC State. I"ve known him for a long time - we"ve been butting heads recruiting in Florida for years! He"s a special person. He"s a great recruiter, a great coach, he has great enthusiasm and he knows how to win. I"m excited about what we can do at NC State."
A Hurricane, W.Va., native, Holliday played for Coach Bobby Bowden, lettering three seasons at linebacker. He was a member of the 1975 squad that defeated NC State in the Peach Bowl. He worked as a graduate assistant and part-time assistant coach from 1979-83 and joined the full-time coaching staff in 1983, working under Don Nehlen.
"For me, it"s not just losing a coach, it"s like losing my best friend," said Nehlen. "He"s been my top guy, one of the cornerstones of this program. They didn"t win many games around here until we got in here. He is, number one, a great football coach. He can coach anywhere, on either side of ball. But he"s also a great recruiter and a great person and he has a great family. We will really miss him."
Holliday earned his B.S. in physical education from West Virginia in 1979 and his master"s in management from WVU in 1981. He and his wife, the former Diana Phillips of Morganton, have a daughter, Meghan (14), and three sons, Cade (13) , Chase (12) and Cody (10).
