Virginia Sweeps Swimming Squads

Charlottesville, Va. (Jan. 15) The Virginia swim squads defeated both the NC State men (140.5-98.5) and the Wolfpack women (134-101) on Saturday at the Aquatics and Fitness Center.
The Cavalier men, ranked 20th in the nation, moved their record to 3-1, 1-1 in the ACC while the Virginia women, ranked 8th, improved to 4-0, 2-0 in the ACC. The Wolfpack men now stand at 9-1, 4-1 in the ACC, while the NC State women fall to 8-3, 1-3, in the ACC.
The Wolfpack men had outstanding performances by Greg Solt and Andy Johnson.
Solt won the 50 freestyle (20.68) and 100 freestyle (45.97) as he dominated the sprint freestyle events. Andy Johnson, who has been on a torrid streak of late, swept on both boards. His score of 315.00 on the one-meter board and 322.35 on the three-meter board gave him victories by a combined total of 132.35 points.
NC State's women performed quite well against the top-10 Cavaliers. Natalie Jones, Katie Sheridan and Shelly Cavaliere all won individual events for the Pack. Cavaliere outlasted Virginia's Alison Sharp on the three-meter board by a score of 297.37-266.47. Sheridan took home top honors in the 500 freestyle in a time of 5:06.27 while Jones had the fastest time in the 200 breaststroke, with a 2:24.79.
Both of NC State's squads will look to return their wining ways on Friday, as they host Texas Christian and Old Dominion. The meets will begin at 3:00 pm in the Willis Casey Aquatics Center. The following day, the Pack will travel to meet Virginia Tech, starting at 2:00 pm.
