Pack Sweeps JMU in Swimming

HARRISONBURG, Va.-- (Jan. 14) North Carolina State set four pool records and defeated James Madison in men's (137-85) and women's (131-94) non-conference swimming and diving Friday evening at JMU's Savage Natatorium. The NC State men's team raised its record to 9-0 and the women improved to 8-2. The JMU men fell to 3-4 and the women slipped to 6-3.
NC State junior Kevin Chipman (Raleigh, NC/Millbrook) set a pool record with his time of 16 minutes and 0.24 seconds in the 1,650-yard freestyle, and junior Braden Holloway (Baton Rouge, La./Baton Rouge Magnet) established a facility-best 57.84 in the 100-yard breaststroke. The Wolfpack divers also set pool records on the 1-meter board as junior Andy Johnson (Rocky Mount, NC/Rocky Mount Academy) won the men's competition with a score of 343.875, and senior Shelly Cavaliere (Odessa, Fla./Gaither) took the women's event with a tally of 289.425.
Junior Brandi Stergion (Danville, Va./George Washington) was a double-winner for the Wolfpack. She claimed the 50-yard freestyle in 24.95 and captured the 100-yard freestyle in 54.38.
JMU junior Samantha Smith (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:05.24 and remains undefeated in breaststroke events this season. Sophomore A.C. Cruickshanks (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman) won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:07.70. Smith and Cruickshanks also swam on the Dukes' winning 400 medley relay team. Freshman Amanda Coyle (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) won the 1,650-yard freestyle and set a pool record with a time of 17:02.61.
The Dukes' lone individual event winner for the men was freshman Patrick Stockton (Midlothian, Va./Clover Hill) as he finished first in the 100-yard freestyle in 47.67.
NC State swims at the University of Virginia on Saturday at 1 p.m.
