For years, East Carolina was looking to find ways to get out of playing at Carter-Finley Stadium. Now, during a season in which NC State will make its first trip to Greenville, the Pirates will still be forced to play a game at Carter-Finley.
The tragic flooding left behind by Hurricane Floyd has forced ECU to move its home game against Miami to Raleigh this Saturday. Pirates athletics director Mike Hamrick received clearance to stage the contest at Carter-Finley after getting permission from NC State's Les Robinson.
Hamrick didn't want to take a chance on hosting the Hurricanes at Dowdy-Ficklen stadium since there are no guarantee's that power will be restored by this weekend. NC State will bill ECU for basic operating expenses, but there will be no other charges. Carter-Finley is available because the Wolfpack has a road game at Wake Forest on Saturday.
At least 20 East Carolina football players have been displaced from their residences because of the water overflow in Greenville. Since posting a 21-3 victory at South Carolina on Saturday night, the Pirates have remained in Columbia while waiting for conditions in Greenville to improve. ECU coach Steve Logan has been conducting practices this week at South Carolina's facilities.
The clean up effort in Greenville has forced East Carolina officials to cancel classes this week.
