The Cowboys raised their record on the season to 16-0, while the Wolfpack dropped to 3-6. The loss marked the first time NC State has given up 40 points or more in a match since a 42-3 loss at Iowa State two years ago. The shutout was the first against the Wolfpack since a 31-0 whitewashing at Oklahoma in January 1996.
Oklahoma State heavyweight Dave Anderton put an exclamation point on the victory with a pin of Billy Noble in the final match of the afternoon. That was the only win by fall for the Cowboys, who also had two technical falls and three major decisions. NC State managed just one takedown, on a first-period move by freshman John Carreon at 149 pounds.
The most competitive matches of the afternoon were at 141, 149, 174 and 184 pounds. Jamill Kelly's 5-3 win over Tommy Davis at 141 pounds was the closest bout of the afternoon. The 15th-ranked Davis had his winning streak snapped at five matches and fell to 13-3 on the season. Kelly, ranked 17th, improved to 6-2.
Carreon was up next and carried a 2-2 tie into the third period against Charles Walker, but Walker scored a point on a penalty to break the tie, and then took Carreon down in the final minute for a 5-2 decision. The win lifted Walker's record to 20-5, while Carreon dropped to 1-5.
At 174, sophomore Kevin Boross battled top-ranked Mark Smith to a 6-1 decision when Boross was unable to finish any of several moves. Smith scored a takedown in each of the first two periods. Boross dropped to 13-5 on the season, while Smith improved to 21-0.
At 184, sophomore Zach Breitenbach (9-10) dropped a 7-3 decision to sixth-ranked Mark Munoz (10-6), yielding two takedowns in the second period.
Jeff Ragan (16-4) started the match off with a 13-4 major decision over No. 20 Lee Carroll (8-7) at 125 pounds, and top-ranked Eric Guerrero (16-0) took a 20-5 technical fall over Greg Bauer at 133. Sixth-ranked Jimmy Arias (12-4) scored three takedowns and two near falls in the third period to break open a close match at 157 and hand 20th-ranked Pierre Pryor (11-6) a 16-3 defeat.
Shawn Smith (4-5) scored an 18-2 technical fall over Kyle Guffey (1-7) at 165, and Josh Cruzan (8-11) won a 12-4 major decision over Josh McClure (3-8) at 197.
