Wolfpack Men And Women Top Ohio In Swimming

RALEIGH, N.C. (Dec. 1) - Both the NC State men's and women's swimming and diving teams were victorious at the Willis Casey Aquatics Center.
The Wolfpack men defeated Ohio by a score of 141-93 while the NC State women toped the Bobcats 126-116. With the victory, the NC State men push their record to 6-0 while the women moved to 5-2. The loss drops the Bobcat men to 2-3 on the year while the women notched their first defeat of the season and are now 6-1.
The women's meet was a close affair throughout and was not decided until the final event when NC State's 400 freestyle relay team of Mandy Horn, Brandi Stergion, Mary Mittendorf and Karen Cone won with a time of 3:33.52. NC State also got help from Shelly Cavaliere as she won on both the one and three-meter boards. Ohio's Kim van Selm had a dominating performance as she placed first in the 1,000 freestyle, 200 freestyle and the 500 freestyle.
The men's meet was less exciting, as the Wolfpack men won nine of the 13 events participated in on Wednesday. The Pack was paced by diver Andy Johnson, who placed first on the one and three-meter boards, and Valter Magnusson, who won the 50 freestyle in a time of 49.54. Ohio got great performances from Nick Melillo and Joe Grigas. Melillo placed first in the 200 freestyle, with a time of 1:43.70, while Grigas won the 100 freestyle, in a time of 48.01.
The Pack will now have off until next calendar year, as they prepare to take on Denison and UNCW on January 7th and 8th, respectively. Both meets will be held at the Willis Casey Aquatics Center on the campus of NC State University.
