DURHAM, N.C. -- The Duke men's soccer team defeated N.C. State 3-2 in overtime at Koskinen Stadium to remain undefeated in the regular season for the first time since the 1982 Final Four squad finished the regular season with a record of 18-2.
The Blue Devils trailed 2-0 just nine minutes into the game, but gained momentum and came back for the victory with just under six minutes remaining in the first overtime period. With the victory, Duke improves to 13-0-3 and 4-0-2 in ACC and clinches the No. 1 seed in next week's ACC Tournament in Winston-Salem. N.C. State falls to 7-6-3 and 1-5-1 in the ACC.
The Wolfpack got off to a quick start on a goal by Matt Tabor in the sixth minute of play. Shaker Asad added N.C. State's second and final goal of the match less than four minutes later when he was taken down in the penalty box and converted on the penalty kick.
After that point, the momentum began to shift and the Blue Devils took control of the game. They got on the scoreboard in the 21st minute with a goal by senior Peter Gail with an assist from freshman Trevor Perea. The Blue Devils still trailed 2-1 at the half.
The Blue Devils took control during the second half as they outshot the Wolfpack 10-3 in the second half. Duke was only able to convert on one of those shots when junior Robert Russell found the back of the net in the seventh minute of the second half. The rest of the half remained physical and neither team was able to score, which led to Duke's fifth overtime this season.
The Blue Devils carried their momentum from the second half over to the overtime period and did not allow the Wolfpack a shot. Senior Troy Garner scored the game winning goal with less than six minutes left in the overtime period, when he took a pass from junior Ali Curtis and shot it past goalie Mitchell Watson.
Duke will next travel to Winston-Salem to compete in the ACC Tournament. After earning the top ranking in the conference, the Blue Devils receive a bye in the first round. The Blue Devils will take on the winner of the No. 4 vs. No. 5 game at 8 p.m. on Friday, November 12.
