Hoops Fans Enjoy 'Monday Madness'
11/1/1999 12:00:00 AM | Men's Basketball
It wasn't midnight madness, but for the 6,500 fans who showed up for NC State's first open practice in the coach Herb Sendek era, it was exciting enough. Not only did the Pack-backers get a chance to take a sneak-peek at the 1999-2000 Wolfpack, they got to do it inside the plush confines of the brand new Entertainment and Sports Arena.
Prior to sending his team out for a series of four 10-minute scrimmages, Sendek gave the spectators a pep talk about the importance of their support this season. His message: wear red and cheer loud. The throaty response to those words set off an ear pearcing cheer.
And after Sendek introduced each member of his team, the Wolfpack played a little basketball.
Different combinations of players were used during the four periods of play. Junior forward Kenny Inge led all scorers with 23 points and added 18 rebounds. And as usual, a few of his rim-rattling dunks brought the house down.
Junior center Ron Kelly had a steady outing, scoring 18 points.
Anthony Grundy added 16, followed by Justin Gainey with 15 points. Damon Thornton and freshman Damien Wilkins had 14 apiece.
NC State will play the first of two pre-season exhibition games on Wednesday night when it plays host to the California All-Stars. Game time at Reynolds Coliseum is 7:30 p.m.
