WILMINGTON, N.C. (Oct. 20)- N.C. State scored a pair of early goals and UNC Wilmington matched them just before intermission as the two teams battled to a 2-2 tie in collegiate men's soccer action at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.
The Seahawks now stand 5-6-1 on the season following the result. The Wolfpack owns a 5-3-3 mark in 11 appearances.
N.C. State jumped on top early at 13:09 when junior midfielder Shaker Asad broke away from several defenders and nailed a 15-foot blast into the top left corner of the net. Asad later picked up on assist when his corner kick at 29:53 was headed in by Damon Butler to give the Wolfpack a 2-0 cushion.
The Seahawks rallied, however, to even the score with two goals within a 10-minute stretch late in the first period. Junior striker Ilia Palouykov put UNCW on the board at 31:24 when he slipped a shot past NCSU goalie Mitchell Watson to cut the deficit to 2-1. Ahmed El Rafei then scored the equalizer at 40:28 on an assist from Paloukov, connecting from 10 yards out.
The Wolfpack outshot the Seahawks, 31-15, and junior midfielder Nick Olivencia launched 10 shots. Tommy Miller had six shots to pace the hosts.
The Seahawks return to Colonial Athletic Association action Saturday with a 1 p.m. match at American. The Wolfpack entertain UNC Chapel Hill Sunday at 2 p.m.
