NC State head coach Dave Doeren
Opening Statement
"It was a tough week and our guys hung together. I thought they worked really hard in practice, it wasn't perfect but was a lot better. There was a lot of good things throughout the game. I thought our focus was as good as it's been. A lot of people are saying things about our guys and me but we hung together and we're going to stay together. I'm really proud of our players and coaches for that. We've got a great bunch of kids here, it's fun to be with them and I enjoyed every minute of today with them.
"We had a couple of penalties that true freshmen made. That was the two that hurt us, but overall there were a lot of positives. I thought Stephen Louis again showed what he's doing, we didn't get a lot of carries for Matt the way they were playing the box. There was a lot of throws for our offense and thought those guys did a good job taking advantage of those things.
"Defensively they played well in the first half. Up until the run at the end of the game I thought they played the run game well. It's one to build on and we have a bye week coming up where we can look at ourselves and continue to work on what we need to do better as we approach our ACC schedule."
On Ryan Finley
"He's just consistent. He understands where to go with the football and leads the ACC in completion rate. He manages the game well and understands what Coach Drinkwitz wants and distributes the ball to our playmakers."
On playmaking between Kentavius Street and Darian Roseboro
"I think they're gaining confidence and was glad they finished some sacks today. We've had a lot of big hits this year where the ball got out and weren't able to get the sack but today were able to do that."
Old Dominion head coach Bobby Wilder
Opening Statement:
“Congrats to NC State. They are a really good football team. Its quarterback (Ryan Finley) is impressive. I think he was completing 71-percent of his passes coming in the game. He was 24-28 tonight. He was on everything. There were times tonight we were in really good coverage and he just put the ball in really good spots.”
“We needed to play a lot better offensively in the first half than we did. I’m really disappointed with the fact that we had the ball across the 50 three different times in the first half and got three points. In the first quarter we had a drive start on their 40-yard line and went three and out. Then we got the ball after a turnover on their 20 and had to settle for a field goal. We needed to be within a touchdown in the first half and that affected us in all phases. Being down 21-3 on the road in the first half makes it really challenging to get back in it.”
“I like the way we came out in the second half and got the stop, went down the field and scored. We ran a fake punt, which really changed the completion of the game in the third quarter. That fake and then Travis Fulgham’s one-handed catch got it to 21-9. Then we gave up a huge play and a touchdown right after that. That was really the story of the game. I felt like at 21-9 if we got another stop and score to make it a one-possession game we might be able to get right back in it. We couldn’t stop them.”
On NCSU QB Ryan Finley:
“He is so accurate. I think he is a three, maybe four read guy. There is not a lot of those in college football. What I mean by that. He can come off his first read, get his second and third read. There were times tonight I thought he was on his second and third read and we couldn’t get to him. He is such a good decision maker. I thought in the ECU game he was really aggressive. Tonight he was a star the way he played. He looks like a next level guy to me. He is poised. His accuracy is impressive. That being said we have to play better on our side of the ball, but if teams can’t get to him, he is going to be a 75-percent guy.”
