Softball Splits Doubleheader With UNCG

RALEIGH – The NC State softball team split its doubleheader with UNCG on Saturday at Dail Stadium. The first game was a back-and-forth battle that the Wolfpack ultimately dropped 5-4, but a five-run fifth inning in the nightcap gave the squad an 8-1 victory to split the series.
The Pack improves to 23-27 and the Spartans fall to 40-10 on the season.
How It Happened
Game One
-After two scoreless innings, a solo shot to left field gave the Spartans a one-run lead in the third.
-The Pack answered in the bottom frame with Alyssa Compton's 2-RBI single up the middle. Jade Caraway led off with a single through the left side and Sam Russ followed with a one-out single to the shortstop. A double steal moved them to second and third.
-In the fifth UNCG regained its lead with a two-run blast to left center after a one-out walk put a runner on.
-Once again the Pack responded in the bottom half to take a 4-3 lead thanks to Haylee Kobziak's two-run homer to left field after Caraway led off with a walk.
-In the sixth the Spartans tallied two more runs to edge the Pack 5-4. A one-out double and walk followed by a wild pitch put runners at second and third, and double to right field brought the runners across.
Game Two
-NC State struck first in the third inning when Cheyenne Balzer brought a pair of runs across with a single to the shortstop. Kobziak hit a two-out single through the right side, and an error allowed her and Compton to advance to second and third.
-UNCG cut its deficit to one in the fourth with a sacrifice fly to center field after a double and bunt single put runners at the corners.
-Chandley Garner led off the bottom frame with a home run to center field to give the Pack a 3-1 lead.
-A five-run fifth inning propelled the Pack to its victory. Balzer brought a pair of runs across again with a single up the middle. Angie Rizzi singled to third base and Kobziak walked to start the side, and a sacrifice bunt moved them to second and third. Then after Caraway legged out an infield single, Garner hit her second homer of the game to left field to extend the Pack's lead to eight.

-Kama Woodall (9-9), threw her sixth complete game of the season to pick up the win. She limited the Spartans to four hits and an earned run while striking out five.
