RALEIGH – The NC State softball team fell 7-4 to Duke on Wednesday evening in the first-ever meeting in the NCAA season between the teams at Dail Stadium.
The Blue Devils improve to 24-22 and the Wolfpack moves to 22-22 on the season.
How It Happened
-The Pack got off to a hot start in the first, scoring three runs on four hits. Jade Caraway led off with a single through the right side, stole second and advanced to third on Cheyenne Balzer's fly out to center field to start the threat. Alyssa Compton then brought Caraway home on a base hit through the right gap, and Chandley Garner singled up the middle then stole second to put runners at second and third. Haylee Kobziak tallied the fourth hit of the frame, a single to right field to drive in Compton, and Angie Rizzi grounded out to the right fielder to score Garner and bring in the final run.
-The Blue Devils threatened in the third as a leadoff double to right center and sacrifice bunt put a runner on third, but Compton gloved a pair of ground balls across the diamond to end the side.
-A sixth-inning surge with six runs on four hits and an error gave the Blue Devils a 6-3 lead. A hit-by-pitch and pair of outfield singles loaded the bases, and an error plated the first two runs. After a walk re-loaded the bases for Duke an unexecuted fielder's choice plated the third run to knot to score at three. A 2-RBI single and RBI single to the shortstop drove in the other three runs in the frame.
-Duke added a run in the seventh on an RBI double to right field after the leadoff batter was hit-by-pitch and advanced on a groundout to first base.
-The Pack tried to rally in the final frame, as Caraway led off with a double and a pair of groundouts allowed her to cross home plate. A swinging strikeout ended the game.
