
Wolfpack Run-Rules Niagara, Falls To Marist On First Day Of Homewood Suites Challenge

RALEIGH – The NC State softball team split its pair of games on Friday at the Homewood Suites by Hilton RDU/RTP Challenge, run-ruling Niagara 9-1 in five innings and dropping a 2-1 decision against Marist in the night cap.
After the first day of competition, the Wolfpack is 16-12 while the Purple Eagles fall to 5-15 and the Red Foxes move to 9-16. The run-rule win in game one was the team's sixth of the season.
How It Happened
Game One
-NC State scored four runs on three hits and an error in the first inning. Alyssa Compton brought in the first two runs with a 2-RBI single to second base, while Cheyenne Balzer scored on a wild pitch and Compton scored on Haylee Kobziak's single up the middle.
-The Pack capitalized on its early lead, scoring three more runs on two hits and an error in the second inning. Jade Caraway was brought home on the error after drawing a one-out walk and advancing on Angie Rizzi's infield single and stolen base. Balzer's single to right center allowed Rizzi to cross home plate from second, and Timberlyn Shurbutt scored the third run on Chandley Garner's sacrifice fly after reaching on the error.
-Kobziak tacked on another run in the third inning as she led off with a homer to left field, her second of the season.
-Niagara scored its only run of the game in the top of the fifth when Kendall Watkins scored on a groundout to the shortstop after drawing a one-out walk and advancing to third on a pair of wild pitches.
-The Pack put away the game in the bottom frame when Kobziak scored on Caraway's sacrifice fly to left field. She led off with a double down the left field line and advanced to third on a wild pitch.
Game Two
-Angie Rizzi's double to shallow center field was all for both teams in the first two innings.
-Marist scored two runs in the third inning. Kourtney Paul plated the first run on Caroline Barrata's RBI single to right field after she led off with an outfield single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. After Barrata stole second she managed to score on a Wolfpack error.
-The Pack threatened in the bottom half with the bases loaded on a walk and pair of singles, but were unable to bring any runs across.
-In the fourth inning the Pack had runners on second and third with one out and in the fifth the bases were loaded with two outs, but the team was unable to take advantage of the situations and plate any runs.
-NC State tried to rally in the seventh when Caraway led off the side with a home run and Shurbutt hit a one-out single, but the next two batters were retired on a pop up a swinging strikeout.

-Kobziak went 3-for-3 at the plate as she hit a single, double and home run in the game, while Rizzi was 2-for-2 with a single and double.
-Harli Hubbard (2-1) picked up her second win of the season as she threw 4.2 innings while giving up three hits and an earned run.
-Caraway, Rizzi and Russ each had a stolen base. Russ is 10-for-10 and Caraway is 8-for-8 on the season.
Game Two
-Kama Woodall (4-5) took the loss in the circle as she threw six innings and gave up three hits and an earned run.
-Caraway's homer in the seventh was her first of the season and second of her career. She led the team with a 2-for-3 performance and Rizzi, Shurbutt and Macauley Prickett each tallied a hit.

NC State will continue competition Saturday at Dail Stadium in the Homewood Suites by Hilton RDU/RTP Challenge. The Pack will play Kennesaw State at 12:15 p.m. The No. 1 and 4 seeds in the tournament will then meet at 2:30 p.m. while the No. 2 and 3 seeds will play at 4:45 p.m. Sunday the winners from both games will meet in the championship game at 12:15 p.m., while the losers will play in the third-place game at 10 a.m.
