RALEIGH – The NC State men's tennis team (4-0) is back in action at home this weekend for a pair of matches at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center. The Wolfpack hosts Elon Friday at 5 p.m. before welcoming Coastal Carolina to Raleigh Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
"It's been a good three weeks off, being able to have a training block," said head coach Kyle Spencer. "We got to work on a lot of the things we saw in our previous two matches. It was a good chance to make sure we got focused on our academics and got ahead in that regard so that when we go on the road, we feel comfortable where we're at academically. We're excited any time we get a chance to play at home and will hopefully have a big crowd. It's another opportunity for the guys to put into play what they've been practicing."
LAST TIME OUT:
The Wolfpack came home from its first road trip of the season with key wins over two Power Five opponents in Northwestern and Minnesota. The Pack battled to 4-3 decisions in both of those matches.
At Minnesota, NC State earned four singles victories to complete a come-from-behind win over the Gophers. Robert Turzak picked up a straight-sets win on court six. Georgiy Malyshev followed suit on court five to remain a perfect 4-0 in singles play this spring. Ivan Saveljic bounced back from dropping his first set and went on to win his match in a third-set tiebreaker, and Alexis Galarneau finished things off with a break on court one to clinch the match.
With the wins, the Wolfpack improved to 4-0 under Spencer's leadership, the program's best start to a season since 2012.
WOLFPACK IN THE RANKINGS:
Through the first month of 2018 competition, Galarneau stands at No. 19 in the Oracle/ITA singles rankings after picking up a solid three-set win over Minnesota's 35th-ranked Stefan Milicevic on the road.
Galarneau and Michael Ogden are ranked No. 58 in doubles.
SCOUTING THE PHOENIX:
After winning its first two matches of the season at home, Elon is now 3-3 overall. Two of its three losses came at the hands of ranked opponents in then-No. 20 South Carolina and No. 1 Wake Forest. In its last outing, Elon bested Troy by a score of 4-3 after taking the doubles point and splitting singles.
Elon brings an experienced group to Raleigh, as its roster features five of its top six singles players from the 2017 season. Though no longer ranked, the Phoenix's top singles player junior Felipe Sarrasague made an appearance at No. 76 in the preseason poll back in September.
The Wolfpack has won all eight of its previous matchups against the Phoenix, with the latest victory coming in a 7-0 sweep at home on Jan. 22, 2017.
SCOUTING THE CHANTICLEERS:
Sunday's meeting with Coastal Carolina will mark the first time that the two programs have matched up. The Chanticleers sit a 1-1 on the season, after falling in the season opener to No. 1 Wake Forest and bouncing back to sweep Francis Marion. The Chanticleers are set to play against Presbyterian Friday before coming to Raleigh to face the Pack.
