Becomes Fifth from NC State to Win Award This Season
RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State redshirt senior Michael Macchiavello was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestler of the Week after defeating the nation's No. 1-ranked wrestler at 197 pounds last Sunday in Ohio State's Kollin Moore.
Â
On the weekend, Macchiavello, from Monroe, N.C., faced the nation's top two ranked wrestlers in his weight class in a pair of home duals to close out the regular season. In the Pack's Friday night win over Virginia Tech, a match that resulted in the Wolfpack winning the 2018 ACC regular season title, Macchiavello dropped a very close, 2-1 decision to No. 2-ranked Jared Haught of Tech.
Â
Macchiavello then came back two days later to upset Moore, scoring two takedowns in the final 30 seconds of the match, including the winner with just five seconds remaining for a 7-5 victory. Macchiavello entered the weekend ranked seventh nationally by InterMat. The loss was just the second for Moore in 21 bouts this year, while Macchiavello improved to 16-2 on the year.
With the final award of the season, Macchiavello becomes the fifth different NC State wrestler to win the award this season. Kevin Jack was named the first season, Hayden Hidlay won the award a league-best three times, Tariq Wilson and Pete Renda were recently named in back-to-back weeks. NC State has also won the final three awards of the season, by three different wrestlers.
