NORFOLK, Va. – The NC State men's tennis team earned its third road win of the season Friday afternoon, beating Old Dominion 4-3 at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center. The Wolfpack remains a perfect 7-0 on the season with the victory, while the Monarchs fall to 5-4.
"It was a good team win today," said head coach Kyle Spencer. "The guys came out with great energy and executed what we've been working on in practice with the doubles and then carried that over to singles. It felt like every guy out there was willing to fight. It was a great crowd atmosphere at Old Dominion, and we were excited and handled it in the right way. I'm impressed with how every guy in every match was into it and wanting to be successful for the team."
The Wolfpack took the doubles point in quick fashion. Alexis Galarneau and Tadas Babelis remained unbeaten as a pair, picking up a 6-2 victory over Old Dominion duo Aziz Kijametovic and Francois Musitelli on court one. Igor Saveljic and Ivan Saveljic won by the same score on court two as they defeated Adam Moundir and Javier Jover Maestre.
In singles, Old Dominion briefly tied the score at one as Moundir edged Igor 6-2, 6-3 on court two, but NC State went on to win three-straight courts to clinch its seventh victory of the season.
Babelis matched up against Michael Weindl on court three, beating the Old Dominion senior 6-0, 6-4.
No. 19 Alexis Galarneau faced a ranked opponent in the Monarch's 76th-ranked Kijametovic, who he took down 6-3, 6-1.
On court five, Georgiy Malyshev sealed the deal in straight sets, defeating Jacob Nicolussi 7-5, 6-4.
The Monarchs won match tiebreakers for the third sets on courts four and six to put the final match score at 4-3.
