
Softball Opens Home Slate This Weekend With ACC/B1G Challenge

RALEIGH – After picking up three wins on opening weekend, the NC State softball team (3-2) will open its home slate this weekend when it hosts Louisville (4-1), Northwestern (4-1), who is receiving votes in this week's national polls, and No. 22/21 Ohio State (5-0) in the 2018 ACC/B1G Challenge at Dail Stadium.
Slated to run Friday through Sunday, the Wolfpack and Cardinals will play the Buckeyes and Wildcats twice apiece, but not each other in the tournament. All four of the Pack's games will be broadcast on the ACC Network Extra.
Duke, Georgia Tech, Florida State and UNC-Chapel Hill are the other host sites for the challenge.

LAST TIME OUT
NC State opened its season last weekend at the FGCU Kickoff Classic in Fort Myers, Fla., posting a 3-2 record. The Pack defeated Georgetown 12-2 (5), LIU Brooklyn 10-1 (5) and Memphis 2-1. The team's win over the Hoyas marked the most runs scored in program history in a season opener.
WOLFPACK IN THE RANKINGS

PACK YOUTH
Every starting lineup on opening weekend comprised of at least six underclassmen, as the final three games featured eight underclassmen, one junior and one senior. All six freshmen saw action on the field and a total of 16 players saw time throughout the weekend.
The Pack's underclassmen contributed 28 of the team's 43 hits and 20 of the 28 runs scored on opening weekend. Freshman Chandley Garner additionally hit a grand slam in the second at bat of her career, the team's lone home run of the weekend.
In the circle sophomore Devin Wallace earned two wins while freshman Kama Woodall picked up one win and one save. The two pitched a combined 28.2 innings over the weekend and struck out 24 batters.
SCOUTING THE COMPETITION
-Ohio State is ranked No. 22 and 21 in this week's NFCA and ESPN/USA Softball rankings, while Northwestern is receiving votes in both polls.
-Ohio State leads the all-time series with the Pack 3-1 while Northwestern defeated the Pack last year at the Mary Nutter Classic when the teams met for the first time.
-The Buckeyes opened their 2018 slate with a perfect 5-0 record while the Wildcats' only loss on opening weekend was to No. 7 Arizona.
-Ohio State's Shelby McCombs and Niki Carver earned Big Ten weekly honors on Monday, as McCombs picked up three wins in the circle with a .34 ERA and Carver hit .500 (4-for-8) on the weekend with two RBIs and a home run.
