#PackCamp Profiles Practice 6: Defensive Line

Raleigh – While each day of practice for the NC State football team begins with walkthroughs, it is not uncommon to see the different position groups conducting their own walkthrough prior to the official start of practice. One group that has been out each morning of camp so far has been the defensive line. Today was no different.

"We've got to make sure we're on point" said defensive line Coach Kevin Patrick. "We've got some assignments, and one thing we've got to do is make great habits. You do that by fundamentals, execution and muscle memory. We want to get as many reps in as many different situations as possible. We don't want our minds to just remember it, we want our bodies to remember it. It's a habit."

Those are the words of the man in charge of one of the most talked-up defensive lines in the country, whose emphasis on the fundamentals of the position makes it impossible for the praise to go to their heads. Patrick still barks at Chubb just as loud to shoot his hands in drills, and Chubb still explodes from under the training chute like a rocket leaving the earth.
Today was the second day in full pads and there was an increase in combative drills, between each other and also against the offensive line, and also eleven-on-eleven scenarios. For fans who have missed seeing Chubb's Dikemebe Mutumbo-style finger wag celebration, rest assured it definitely happened a time or two during the scrimmage.
The likes of Chubb, B.J. Hill and Kentavius Street are not the only members of the defensive line to turn heads, as several of the newcomers have clearly been taking notes from their more seasoned teammates and caught Patrick's eye.
"Grant Gibson" articulated Patrick. "When you come in as a freshman, the game's moving fast and physical up front. He definitely has (stood out). Xavier Lyas, who was here in the spring, is a very talented young man. He's got a nice skill-set and we've just got to continue developing the fundamentals. He's going to be an outstanding player. All those guys have shown some really good promise."
Even though tomorrow is Media Day and the highly-anticipated Meet the Pack Day for the football squad, they will still hold a workout on Sunday morning.
