#PackCamp Profiles Practice 3: Quarterbacks
8/3/2017 7:40:00 AM | Football
Raleigh – After two days off for summer school finals, the NC State football team was well-rested and eager to get back onto the field heading into day three of practice and the first workout in shoulder pads. Although the team is not tackling to the ground, there was contact work, as time was spent on one-on-one combatives, 11-on-11 third down situations and moving the ball down the field.
The quarterbacks, headlined by Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award candidate Ryan Finley, along with Jalan McClendon, are typically the first group to arrive at practice and among the last to leave. Today was no different, as the group was out early, warming their arms up and getting loose prior to the two-hour session.

Practice began with the quarterbacks putting their play-calling abilities to the test in a series of walkthroughs, followed by warm-ups as usual.
Staying true to the Wolfpack's mantra of winning the day and mastering the fundamentals, the quarterbacks would then go through a series of footwork drills, including several involving the speed ladder.
Offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Eliah Drinkwitz stressed the need for toughness in the pocket, as he had his QBs work with the receivers, putting the guys in situations where they were forced to complete passes while under duress.
While remaining accurate under pressure is a must for a quarterback, so is the hand-off to a running back. A botched hand-off can lose a close game, so Drinkwitz ensured time was spent mastering this fine art form. This refinement of the fundamentals has become the norm for Finley, McClendon and redshirt-junior Woody Cornwell, but for freshman duo Matt McKay and Micah Leon, the opportunity to learn from their more seasoned teammates was invaluable.

Following the work with the receivers and running back, the remainder of practice was spent in seven-on-seven situations. The spirit and competitiveness that we saw on the weekend carried over to today.
Post-practice, Coach Doeren emphasized the need to focus on the small things, and how every inch, wasted step and violation accumulates in the drive.

Be sure to look out for tomorrow's edition of #PackCamp Profiles, for an inside look at what practice is like for our cornerbacks.
