RALEIGH – Colleen Johnson has recently been hired as the Director of Special Events, Sales and Operations for NC State Athletics, as announced by Associate Athletic Director of Facilities and Operations John Portland.
Johnson will handle event sales and customer relations for all campus and external special events hosted in Athletics venues. She also serves on the Board of Directors at the NC State University Club.
"I'm extremely excited to be transitioning into this new role at NC State, and want to thank John Portland and Adina Stock for believing in me through this process and the opportunity to continue working with the Wolfpack," said Johnson. "This is a fairly new position within the athletics department, so I'm excited to make 'Pack Special Events' its own brand. It's also exciting to be able to transition everything I've learned and experienced as a coach, and I look forward to this new role for my professional development and what it could lead to.
"I truly believe that our venues are not only state of the art facilities for our teams, but have also gotten to a point to where they're state of the art venues for events beyond athletics. I'm excited to be showcasing our facilities via concerts, receptions, banquets and so much more. I believe the sky is the limit and can't wait to showcase what we have on NC State's campus to the greater community of Raleigh and beyond, and make our marquee facilities available to diverse groups around."
Johnson has an extensive public relations and marketing background. Prior to coming to NC State, she worked for a PR firm in Vancouver for three years. In addition, she held jobs in Atlanta working in consumer affairs at Coca-Cola and as a producer's assistant at Sport South Television.
Before becoming NC State's Director of Special Events, Sale and Operations, Johnson coached women's gymnastics for 18 years at the collegiate level, including 12 seasons at NC State. She was a four-time Assistant Coach of the Year, and spearheaded community service efforts at NC State with the Pack earning the Community Spirit Award 12 times.
As a gymnast, Johnson has collected many different accolades. She was a member of the Canadian National Gymnastics Team from 1988 to 1991, including being a part of the bronze medal winning team at the 1991 Pan American Games in Cuba.
In her collegiate career at Florida, Johnson earned All-America status on the uneven bars in 1992. She competed in the all-around at four consecutive NCAA Championships, and finished in fifth place in the all-around at the 1994 SEC Championships. She was also a Canadian National Team member.
Johnson graduated from the University of Florida in 1996 with a degree in public relations. In 1995, she was named the Scholar-Athlete of the Year at Florida and was an Academic All-American from 1992-95.
She is also a freelance choreographer in her spare time.
Johnson resides in Raleigh with former Wolfpack All-American Mike Lombardo (wrestling) and are the proud parents of one daughter, Gianna.
