Wolfpack Concludes Series With 6-1 Loss To No. 19/19 Tennessee

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The NC State softball team dropped the final game of its weekend series with No. 19/19 Tennessee, 6-1, on Sunday afternoon at the Sherri Parker Lee Stadium in Knoxville, Tenn.
The Wolfpack falls to 12-24 and the Volunteers improve to 31-5 on the season.
Game Rewind
-NC State threatened in the top of the first as Tyler Ross was left on third base. She led off the order with a single to left field, and Jade Caraway followed with a six-pitch walk. A double play with Molly Hutchison at the plate (2B to SS to 1B) advanced her to third.
-Tennessee put up one run in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single to center field. The Vols quickly put two on base with infield singles, and Meghan Gregg brought the leadoff hitter Aubrey Leach home from second base.
-The Pack knotted the game in the second. Molly Martin struck out swinging, but a passed ball allowed her to reach first and pinch runner Natalie Jones to score from third base. Cheyenne Balzer led off the frame with a five-pitch walk, and an infield single and sacrifice bunt moved runners to second and third.
-Both teams were retired in order in the third inning, but UT added a pair of runs in the fourth on RBI singles to left and right field.
-A two-run homer in the fifth by Megan Geer extended Tennessee's lead to 5-1.
-CJ McClain drove in another run with a single to the shortstop later in the inning. A walk and hit-by-pitch put two on base after the home run, and a sacrifice bunt by Jenna Holcomb moved the runners up a base.
-After both squads were kept at bay in the sixth, NC State tried to rally in the final inning. Two runners were left on base as a groundout to the first baseman sealed the victory for the Vols.
-Peyton Silverman earned the start in the circle, pitching her 15th complete game of the season.
-Moore led the batting order with a 2-for-3 performance, while Ross tallied two hits in her four trips to the plate.
On Deck
NC State will return to action Wednesday as it hosts UNC-Greensboro in a midweek game at Dail Stadium. First pitch it set for 5 p.m.
