NC State Baseball Wins ACC Home Opener Against Miami, 5-3

Junior Shane Shepard drives in game-winning runs in the bottom of the eighth
RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State baseball team opened its Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) home schedule with a 5-3 win against the Miami Hurricanes Friday evening at Doak Field at Dail Park.
NC State moves to 11-8 overall and 2-2 in ACC play, while Miami falls to 8-10 and 2-2 in league games. Austin Staley earned the win (1-0) for the Wolfpack, his first of the season, while Andrew Cabezas suffered the loss (0-2) for the Hurricanes.
Turning Point
With the score tied 3-3 heading to the bottom of the eighth, NC State scored a pair of runs to take a 5-3 lead. Joe Dunand walked and Evan Mendoza followed with a single through the left side. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch, as Dunand moved over to third base and Mendoza to second base.
After an intentional walk to load the bases for Shane Shepard, the junior made Miami pay by hitting a double to left center, scoring Dunand and Mendoza to give the Wolfpack a 5-3 lead.
Game Recap
NC State struck first in the game after a wild pitch allowed Mendoza to score from third base to give the Wolfpack a 1-0 lead. Miami countered with a run the next inning to tie the score at one thanks to a sacrifice fly from Carl Chester.
Will Wilson led off the sixth inning for the Pack with a double off the wall in left field, narrowly missing his third home run of the year. He scored on a single past the Miami third baseman off the bat of Dunand, as NC State regained the lead 2-1.
After stealing second base, Dunand came around to score on an RBI single by Debo to make it 3-1 in favor of the Wolfpack.
The Hurricanes knotted the score at three in the eighth after a pair of solo home runs, but NC State rallied in the bottom of the frame and held on for the win.
On the Mound
- Sean Adler started on the mound for NC State and pitched 4.2 innings, allowing just two hits while striking out five batters.
- When he ran into trouble in the fifth, Joe O'Donnell relieved him and struck out the next batter looking to escape the bases loaded jam.
- O'Donnell struck out the first three batters he faced, all with strikeouts looking. He did not give up a hit in 2.1 innings pitched with five strikeouts.
- Staley entered the game after him and threw the final two innings, allowing two runs on three hits with a pair of strikeouts.
Inside the Box Score
- Mendoza paced the Pack at the plate with a 2-for-4 performance with two runs scored.
- Josh McLain also had a multi-hit day with a 2-for-4 outing.
- Brock Deatherage, Debo, Dunand, Shepard and Wilson had one hit each.
