PRINCETON, N.J. – Three seniors, three top-10 wrestlers, three victories at the 2017 NWCA All-Star Classic.

#8 NC State started its season in fine form, as all three members that traveled to Princeton and competed in the annually NWCA All-Star Classic came away with wins on Sunday.

#2 Kevin Jack had the most exciting match of the event pulling out a last second win at 141 pounds, #3 Pete Renda controlled his bout at 184 pounds, and #10 Michael Macchiavello got a third-period takedown to claim victory at 197 pounds.

"This was a great event put on by the NWCA and Princeton," said NC State head coach Pat Popolizio. "We are very happy and thankful to be part of it with our three guys this weekend.

"I am extremely proud of the way our guys competed and represented NC State. This sets the tone in the right direction for us starting the season and looking forward to seeing our whole team in action next weekend."

Renda started the day for the Wolfpack with a decisive 5-2 win over #4 Drew Foster of Northern Iowa. Foster got a late takedown in the first and was up 2-0 after the opening period. Renda started the second down, got an escape and then his own takedown to go up 3-2 to start the third. With Renda on top, Foster was hit for a pair of stalls and Renda rode out the entire period to earn the ride time point and the win.

Macchiavello was just added to the event on Friday, but came away with a 3-2 win over #14 of Frank Mattiace of Penn. After a scoreless first, Macchiavello scored an escape point and went up 1-0 entering the third. Mattiace evened it up with an escape to start the third, but Macchiavello scored the bout's lone takedown with 36 left and walked away with the win.

Jack scored an 8-7 win over former NC State teammate, #3 Bryce Meredith of Wyoming. After a scoreless first, the action picked up in a big way in the final two periods. Meredith scored an escape, but Jack quickly got a takedown to go up 2-1. After a Meredith reversal and then Jack escape, the bout was tied 3-3 going into the third.

Jack went up 4-3 with an escape with 1:30 left. Meredith then scored a takedown that resulted in three reversals. Jack got the first reversal, then Meredith scored one to go up 7-6 with 30 seconds left. Jack would make a final move with a reversal with seven seconds left to win 8-7.

All of the matches were exhibitions and do not count towards season records.

NC State will see its first team action of the season next weekend, as the Wolfpack heads to Troy, N.Y. On Saturday, the Wolfpack will face Ithaca, #19 Oklahoma and The Citadel at the Journeymen Duals. On Sunday, NC State will then compete in the Journeymen Classic.
