Wolfpack Falls at Home to #6 Clemson, 38-31

RALEIGH, N.C. – #20 NC State went into halftime with a slight lead, but #6 Clemson outscored NC State 21-10 in the second half to claim a 38-31 win at Carter-Finley Stadium.

The Tigers (8-1, 6-1 ACC) scored a pair of TDs in the third quarter. The Wolfpack (6-3, 4-1) cut the lead to seven just three minutes into the fourth, but Clemson turned a Pack interception into an insurance touchdown to go up 10 with just over six minutes left for the win.

After a NC State field goal cut it to 38-31 with 1:50 left, Clemson recovered the onside kick and ran the clock down to 1:31.

Starting at its own 20-yard line, the Pack moved the ball to the Clemson 28, but was stopped on fourth down on the final play of the game.

The loss was the first in ACC for NC State this season, and also the first at home.

The teams traded scores the entire first half, as the Pack went into halftime with a 21-17 lead.

NC State started the scoring with a Ryan Finley to Kelvin Harmon 40-yard TD pass just two minutes into the game. Clemson answered with a 77-yard punt return for a score.

Jaylen Samuels scored the Pack's next two TDs, a 1-yard rush and a 7-yard reception – sandwiched around a Clemson TD – to give the Pack a 21-14 lead midway through the second quarter. The Tigers added a field goal five minutes before halftime.

After Tim Kidd-Glass ended Clemson's opening drive of the game with his first career interception, NC State went 40 plays in three plays for the first score of the day. On 3rd & 10 from the Clemson 40, QB Ryan Finley found WR Kelvin Harmon deep down the middle for a 40-yard TD pass.

After Clemson took its largest lead of the game at 31-21 with a TD on the final play of the third quarter, NC State responded on the next drive to cut the lead to 31-28 with 12:23 left to play. The Pack went 65 yards in six plays, capped by a Ryan Finley to Jakobi Meyers 15-yard TD score. On the drive, Finley was a perfect 4-of-4 for 69 yards.

• The Pack scored a TD on its first possession of the game for the first time since the Furman game, and its first points on its first drive since the Syracuse game.

• With his two TDs (1 rushing, 1 receiving), Jaylen Samuels now has 43 for his career, moving him into second place in school history for career TDs (Ted Brown – 51). Today marked the second time this season Samuels has had at least 1 rushing score and 1 receiving score (@ FSU).

• In the first quarter, QB Ryan Finley was a perfect 6-for-6 for 75 yards, including a 40-yard TD pass. He completed his first 14 on the day, with his first incompletion not coming until 3:11 left in the second quarter.

• With 338 passing yards, Finley now has 5,570 in his two-year Wolfpack career, and moves into sixth place all-time for most career passing yards at NC State.

NC State will be back in road action next weekend, as the Pack travels to Boston College next Saturday. The game time will be announced before noon tomorrow morning.
